Minute by Nicholas Nolan to Seamus MacÚgo1 (Dublin)

Dublin, 22 November 1950

Leas-Rúnaí Príobháideach
You will see from the papers on this file that the Archbishop, in his letter of the 2nd ult, asked the Taoiseach to see him & that the Minister for Justice, on the 6th ult, sent the Taoiseach 3 copies of a memorandum on the refugee problem - which I understand was specially prepared in the Department of Justice for the purpose of the interview sought by the Archbishop with the Taoiseach. Can you say whether the Taoiseach did, in fact, see the Archbishop on the matter & whether he handed the Archbishop a copy of the memorandum referred to above? The file is silent on these matters.

I am making this inquiry at the request of Mr. Costigan, of the Department of Justice, who informs me that his Minister has recently received a request for certain information regarding the refugee problem from the Archbishop, & that, for the purpose of framing the reply, he would like to know whether the Taoiseach gave the Archbishop a copy of the memorandum that accompanied the Minister for Justice's letter of the 6th ult.

Runai Cúnta,
I have spoken to the Taoiseach about this matter. He feels sure that he gave the Archbishop a copy of the D/Justice Memorandum although he thought it was sent as an enclosure to a letter addressed to the Archbishop. The Taoiseach visited His Grace on 12th October, 1950.
