Letter from Colonel Dan Bryan to Frederick H. Boland (Dublin)
(G2/C/233) (Personal and Secret)

Dublin, 24 June 1948

Dear Fred,

Alleged Escape Routes for Wanted Nazis, etc. through Ireland.

Further to previous correspondence herewith another note I have sent to Mr. Carroll,1 Garda Síochána Headquarters, on this problem. My attention has been directed to it from a special source of which you are aware and I intended calling and discussing the matter with you. As this matter is drifting so long it has now reached the stage in which neglect may reflect on my good-will and good credit.

Actually Dorendahl2 was found in possession of Travel Permit No. 18988 which had been issued at Cobh to Michael Francis O'Kelly of Glenbrook, Passage West, Co. Cork. Dorendahl's photograph had been substituted for that of O'Kelly. O'Kelly had obtained the Travel Permit at the request of Captain Schneider of the German motor vessel Adelaar.3

I understand from the Garda that there are now 34 of those aliens in the country and the Department of Justice is considering the whole problem of their registration and future. Except in a few cases I have not seen the detailed data at the disposal of the Garda and the Department of Justice.

Yours sincerely,
Dan Bryan

1 Chief Superintendent Patrick Carroll, Garda Síochána Crime and Security Division.

2 A former German POW apprehended by Gardaí in June 1948.

3 The Adelaar left Ireland for Argentina in September 1948 with a number of Dutch Nazi collaborators and their families on board.
