Extract from a letter from Frederick H. Boland to William Warnock (Stockholm)

Dublin, 1 March 1948

Dear Warnock,
As reports from the missions abroad very rarely call for any reply, the representative is left guessing as to what the Department thinks of them and, in the face of the Department's silence, is apt to feel discouraged. I should like to take the opportunity to tell you, therefore, that your reports are always read with interest here and that many of them - particularly those dealing with matters such as the Marshall Plan and developments in Sweden touching, however indirectly, on the Marshall Plan position - are very valuable at the present time. It is a great help, too, to get promptly the reactions of the Swedish Press to important developments - not only developments in this country, such as the recent change of Government, but developments abroad likely to affect this country such as Mr. Bevin's Western Union proposal, the proposed admission of Spain to ERP, etc., etc. It is well, too, to let us have, wherever possible, the English texts of important Swedish policy statements, as you did, for example, in the case of Professor Unden's recent speech in Parliament.1
