Dearg code telegram from Joseph P. Walshe to Robert Brennan (Washington)
(No. 44)

DUBLIN, 24 February 1944

Your 571 and 58.2 For your information Chief told Gray there is no question whatsoever of yielding to this pressure. It would be the step to war and end of democratic rule here. It is an act of aggression. It would involve loss of our independence if not resisted. There is no basis whatever for allegation as American intelligence, which is in direct touch and through British, is well aware. We have received note from British supporting request. Could you find out if copy of United States note is given to Australia and Canada? We shall probably reply through you.
