HOLY SEE, 12 June 1944

Cardinal called me on Sunday, June 11th. He asked me to convey message from the Holy Father to Taoiseach that, under Divine Providence, He attributed safety of Rome to timely and persistent pressure of Minister, to whom He sends heartfelt thanks and His Benediction, requesting him to continue representations for respect of Rome.

The present Allied occupation is considerable, although He is assured position will soon be regularised. Militarised troops in great numbers continue to pass through the City. I gather, however, that Pope has little anxiety and Allied Command is very respectful.
