ROME, 29 July 1943

With fall of Fascism, populace expected immediate peace. Disappointment at Government statement that war is to be continued is general, and fear is widespread that, if peace does not come quickly, Bolshevism will result.

Here in Rome there were outbursts of shooting last night, despite most rigorous military control. Swedish Minister's motor car was held up ten times between Legation and Foreign Office.

Government efforts being made to save dynasty, as it is thought likely King will be forced to abdicate in favour of grandson.
