Extract from the minutes of a meeting of the Cabinet
on British plans to introduce conscription in Northern Ireland
(G.C. 2/270) (Item 1)

DUBLIN, 24 May 1941

The Taoiseach reported on the representations which he had caused to be made to the British Government in regard to the question of the application of conscription to Northern Ireland. It was agreed that further representations should be made by way of a message from the Taoiseach, on behalf of the Government, to the British Prime Minister, Mr. Churchill, for the British Government.

The Taoiseach also reported on conferences with representatives of the Fine Gael and Labour Parties, respectively, which took place on the 23rd May, 1941.

It was agreed that the Ceann Comhairle should be requested to summon Dáil Éireann to meet at 3 p.m. on Monday, 26th May, 1941, for the purpose of receiving a statement from the Taoiseach.1
