(No. 285) (Copy)

Washington, 11 November 1940

I saw Under Secretary, gave him copy of Chief's speech and statement of position; he said it was very clear from both that Ireland could have no other policy and that Ireland's peace was asset to Britain and any clash between two countries would be disastrous for both: he assured me no approach had been made from Britain: asked if it were desirable I should see President he said there was no need because he would immediately put position before him fully.
