I beg to report that in my minute No. 9/M/40, dated the 6th March, 1940,¹ I mentioned that Mr. Wei Kuo Chiang,² son of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek,³ was one of the guests at a musicale at our home.

I had quite an interesting conversation with him after most of the guests had left. He was extremely cordial, and expressed his sincere appreciation of our hospitality. It was surprising his intimate knowledge of Irish history, and how closely he had followed Ireland's struggle for independence. Mr. Chiang also referred appreciatively to the fact that Mr. de Valera was the only one to make a stand at Geneva against the grabbing of Manchuria by Japan, and said it was a pity that the advice he gave at the time to the Assembly of the League of Nations was not heeded.
