Letter from Neville Chamberlain to Eamon de Valera (Dublin)

London, 25 September 1939

My dear de Valera,

I was very glad to have your letter of the 22nd September1 and I want to thank you for agreeing to accept the name 'Representative' which I suggested. I have seen Sir John Maffey who has explained to me the difficulties in which this will involve you and I appreciate all the more on this account your readiness to meet me.

I am very glad to learn from your letter that, in your opinion, Sir John Maffey's qualities will enable him to make a success of his service and he has accordingly been appointed and will take up his new duties as soon as possible.

May I add my warm thanks also for the personal note in your postscript. It is a satisfaction to me that you so thoroughly understand my past and present anxieties and your sympathy is very welcome.

Yours sincerely
Neville Chamberlain
