Memorandum by Michael McDunphy

Dublin, 20 November 1932

1. The Attorney General accompanied by Mr. Hearne of the Department of External Affairs called on the Chief Justice with a view to discussing with him the question of his assumption of the duties of office as Acting Governor General pending the appointment of a successor to Mr. James McNeill.

2. The Chief Justice stated that in his opinion it would be obligatory on him to take the oath of office and the oath of allegiance, and that he did not desire to take these oaths.

3. The position thus created was duly reported to the President and submitted by him to the Cabinet.1
