Letter from Francis T. Cremins (for Joseph P. Walshe) to Timothy A. Smiddy (London)
(L.N. 80/219) (Confidential) (Copy)

Dublin, 12 April 1930

I am directed by the Minister to inform you that official notification has been received from the Government of Australia that they will support our candidature for a non-permanent seat on the Council.

As mentioned in my semi-official note of the 11th inst.,1 Canada has also promised her support.

You might make occasion to refer confidentially to this information in conversations with the High Commissioners of South Africa and New Zealand. South Africa and New Zealand have not yet replied to our telegrams asking for their support and the knowledge that Canada and Australia are supporting us may help to dispose them to an early and favourable decision.

It would be well, too, if the decision of Canada and Australia were conveyed indirectly to the High Commissioner for India and to the British Government.

for Secretary
