Extracts from a letter from Timothy A. Smiddy to Desmond FitzGerald (Dublin)
(144/23)

WASHINGTON, 20 April 1923

A Chara,

POLICY

[Matter omitted]
All the active Irish-Americans - supporters of Irish Free State, as well as Irregulars - are against Ireland's entry into League of Nations.
[Matter omitted]
Personally I am of opinion that in the 'long run' in the U.S.A., the advantages of marking in every way possible - and the League of Nations does it in a high degree - Ireland as an independent State will outweigh any present hostility. In fact, the Administration at Washington is only seeking a Diplomatic way of entering the League.
