The Minister for External Affairs reported that an approach had been made to the Ambassador in London by the Japanese Ambassador¹ in that city suggesting the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Japan.

It was agreed that it should be intimated that the appointment of a Japanese diplomatic representative in Dublin would be acceptable but that, for financial and other reasons, it would not be practicable to appoint an Irish representative in Tokyo.
