Letter from Seán Murphy to John J. Hearne (Washington DC)
(Copy)

Dublin, 19 December 1955

Mr. Lester Pearson when passing through Shannon yesterday had a long talk with the Minister on the subject of Ireland’s admission to the United Nations. In the course of this talk Mr. Pearson said to the Minister that he was convinced that the Canadian delegation could be of considerable assistance to the Irish delegation in a number of ways and that the Canadian delegation would be only too happy to extend such assistance. This offer of assistance was repeated to the Minister by the Canadian Ambassador in a letter of congratulations on the admission of Ireland to the United Nations. The Minister feels that this offer is completely sincere and is in accordance with the genuine friendship of which Canada has already given expression in so many ways. He would consequently be glad if close contact were maintained with Mr. McKay,1 the Canadian Permanent Delegate in New York.
