Handwritten letter from Robert Brennan to Eamon de Valera (Dublin)

WASHINGTON, 25 May 1945

Dear Chief,
Many thanks for your letter of Whit Monday.1

Personally I am glad you did the right thing concerning Hempel but the atmosphere created here because of that is still bad. For instance, not one of our old friends in Congress offered to put your speech in the Record. It would not be correct to say they are cool but they are wary because of the atmosphere I spoke of. The speech was inserted on the Record by a congressman from Ohio, a newcomer.

The reaction to the speech itself has been excellent and generally speaking there are indications that the hostile press barrage is easing up, thank God.

With kindest regards from all here.

Yours sincerely,
Bob
