Minute by Michael McDunphy on the accession of King Edward VIII

Dublin, 22 January 1936

Accession to Throne (21st January 1936)

The new King, Edward VIII, was proclaimed King in London yesterday, January 21st. The Saorstát was not represented.

Copies of

    1. Proclamation,
    2. the Court Circular, and
    3. the King's Declaration,

issued in this connection, are attached.

When King George V came to the throne in 1910 proclamations were issued not only in London but in the Dominion capitals as well.

The question as to whether a proclamation should be issued by the Executive Council in connection with the accession of Edward VIII was considered yesterday, and although no formal decision was recorded, it was decided that no action should be taken.
