Privy Council - Abolition of Appeals

Consideration was given to draft Bills designed to secure the abolition of appeals from the Courts of Saorstát Éireann to the Privy Council, viz.

A. Supreme Court (Confirmation of Judgment) Bill

The object of this Bill was to enable the Governor General acting on the advice of the Executive Council to give statutory effect to any Order, Judgment or Decree of the Supreme Court.

The general principle of the Bill was approved but the draft was referred back to the Attorney General for amendment in regard to details.

B. Constitution (Amendment No. 17) Bill, 1930

Two alternative drafts A. and B. making absolute the finality of decisions of the Supreme Court and for that purpose deleting the proviso to Article 66 of the Constitution, were considered.

Draft A. was approved.1
